Deep Purple were grander than grand, with a sound that was kept huge by the bands avoidance of then-popular thematic explorations. They stayed the loud-and-hard course, as evidenced by this lavish four-CD box. A photo-rich booklet accompanies a host of early cover singles ("Kentucky Woman" and "River Deep-Mountain High" among them), a couple of demos ("Shadows," "Love Help Me"), and some belated 1980s and 90s cash-ins on the bands popularity in Japan. But, of course, the meat of this set is heaped on the first three CDs, each of which holds blasting rockers aplenty, including the Beatles "Help" turned into cranked-up faux psychedelia. Ritchie Blackmore is the centerpiece here, in part because the remainder of the bands "voice" shifted with Blackmores whims. In fact, the only works featuring the more unpredictable Tommy Bolin are the flawed, funky "Gettin Tighter" (with forgettable vocals by Glenn Hughes) and the superior "Comin Home." Ultimately, Shades proves Deep Purple had an astonishing grasp of blaring guitar riffology. Two words: this rocks! --Andrew Bartlett

There have indeed been countless Judas Priest compilations issued over the years. But if youre a Priest collector, then the 2011 release Single Cuts has to be one of the most intriguing archival releases the group has ever issued. That said, this observation only pertains to the pricier 52-song/20-disc (!) box set version, not the lighter-on-the-wallet single-disc version, which serves as another Priest "best-of." The former version is comprised of the groups complete U.K. CBS/Columbia singles (from 1977-1992), and each CD single is an exact replica -- cover and all -- of the original vinyl single. And while there were plenty of throwaway B-sides (in other words, merely another studio track plucked from the singles respective album), there were also quite a few non-album/live versions of classics included as B-sides, which get their chance to shine once more. Tops of the list have to be "Starbreaker," "White Heat Red Hot," and "Beyond the Realms of Death," all of which were recorded in concert during the late 70s. Elsewhere, youll also find great live readings of "Breaking the Law," "Freewheel Burning," and "Youve Got Another Thing Comin." And as far as the single-disc version of Single Cuts goes, its certainly one of the more interesting Priest compilations from a track listing perspective, as such oft-overlooked tunes as "Before the Dawn," "Evening Star," "Dont Go," "(Take These) Chains," and "Some Heads Are Gonna Roll" are featured alongside the expected classics. Whether youre a longtime collector looking for a one-of-a-kind release, or a newcomer searching for a smartly assembled collection of Priest classics, both versions of Single Cuts are winners.

There are several Cash boxes available, but The Legend--spanning the years 1955-2002 but concentrating on his long tenure at Columbia and, to a lesser degree, his beginnings at Sun--probably belongs at the top of the list. Cashs greatest strengths are dramatized on these four, thematically programmed discs: Win, Place and Show: The Hits; Old Favorites and New; The Great American Songbook (mostly traditional songs); and Family and Friends (collaborations). For starters, consider the staggering depth and breadth of his repertoire (perhaps matched only by those of Bob Dylan and Ray Charles), embracing ancient folk tunes ("Streets of Laredo"), teen pop ("Ballad of a Teenage Queen"), mature contemporary rock ("Highway Patrolman"), gospel ("Were You There When They Crucified My Lord"), topical fare ("Ballad of Ira Hayes"), country standards ("Time Changes Everything"), novelties ("One Piece at a Time"), and more. Then theres the way his spare, spacious sound opens up to take in horns ("Ring of Fire"), strings ("Sunday Mornin Comin Down"), anything. The Legend includes seven previously unissued sides, most prominently "It Takes One to Know Me," a stirring salute to his wife June. --John Morthland

No way can a mere four discs cover every facet of the blues kings amazing recording career, but MCA makes a valiant stab at it. The first two discs, as expected, are immaculate: opening with his Bullet Records debut ("Miss Martha King"), the box continues with a handful of pivotal RPM/Kent masters before digging into his 1960s ABC-Paramount material ("Im Gonna Sit in til You Give In" and "My Babys Comin Home" are little-recalled gems). The hits -- "The Thrill Is Gone," "Why I Sing the Blues," "To Know You Is to Love You" -- are all here, and if much of the fourth disc is pretty disposable, it only mirrors Kings own winding down in the studio.
